Crappie feed softly, so you want a rod that isn’t too stiff but can still loads up on the hookset. The material has to be sensitive enough to feel tiny movement, but still stiff enough to load up when needed. That delicat mix of feel and strength is what makes it special.

The rod’s character are defined by its action and most Cypress Creek rods is medium-fast or fast actions. This mean they have power in the bottom half and a bit more give at the top of rod. This achieves two things.
For one thing, you can set the hook and not rip the bait away from tender mouth. And secondly, when the fish get out into weeds, this gives you some pull to get them back out again. Sometimes a slower action rod feel softer and will set the hook nicely.
However, sometimes it don’t have the “punch” to set it quickly enough. Too-soft of a rod result in missed fish whereas a little too stiff is better then too-soft. You can only throw what you’re rated to throw.
Matching Rod Power to Lure Weight
For example, the Ultralight series are designed with finesse in mind, whereas the Medium series are designed to step-up to tackle heavier crankbaits or jigs. So if you get the rating incorrect, you’ve got a mismatch. Throwing a heavy lure on an ultralight rod will kill its action.
And throwing a light jig on a medium rod will also kill sensitivity. Match the rod to what you’re going to throw most, not necessarily to the size of fish you might catch with that bait. The weight of the lure dictate how efficiently the rod work.
